Unraveling the Magic of Hackathons in Accra
gm my people,
I know you have all been waiting for this recap for way too long, but I have a good excuse! I felt overwhelmed and in need of healthy solitude. 💕🫶🏿
Anyways, enjoy this recap of ETHAccra.
ETHAccra was buzzing, to say the least and I am so excited for the impact we have created. Here's a breakdown of what ETHAccra was all about and everything we have accomplished!
First things first, it is prideful to note that it was the first in-person Ethereum focused hackathon that took place in West Africa and third overall in Africa to date. We hosted the event from September 7th - September 9th 2023 at University of Legon in Accra, Ghana. The attendance we had was impressive, as these numbers and figures demonstrate:
💻 97 registered hackers who showcased their skills and creativity
🧩 18 impressive project submissions
🏆 USD 10K in sponsor prizes
Projects that caught my attention ✨ 🚀:
MultiPay - better subscription management and payment system for users especially in Africa.
Greenance - offers a solution by leveraging blockchain and DeFi technology to create a transparent and accountable platform that connects donors with verified green projects. It simplifies green project financing and using carbon credits, making it more accessible and rewarding for users.
YaraPay - is a simple, easy to use, and secure application for managing your digital assets. It allows you to send and receive payments, pay bills and manage your assets in a secure way.a
MetroElektrik - innovative electricity subscription system on the blockchain.
DonorSynk - tackles the blood donor shortage by rewarding donors with tokens for health check-ups and exclusive NFTs, while hospitals gain access to a reliable pool of donors for a steady blood supply.
However, I have to be candid and admit that pulling off this event logistically and partly remote, was quite a trip 😎. Despite that, the hassle was worth it and I am proud to say that we brought on board sponsors like Buidl Guidl, The Graph, Near Africa, Celo Africa DAO, Ethereum Support Program (ESP), Filecoin Africa, Remix and Mazzuma GPT. Their support played a crucial role and brought forth a vibrant and innovative atmosphere of the hackathon. Additionally, we had some amazing collaborations and partnerships with community partners such as Web3Bridges, Web3Afrika, MEST, Bankless Africa, Aya HQ, Unlock Protocol, StreamETH, DeFi Africa, Afroblocks, Taikai and Kweku Tech. These partnerships were crucial in building a sense of community, exchanging information, and enhancing the hackathon's impacts.
For the first edition our aim was bringing amazing brains and top-notch vibes together. We had a great time together to network, share ideas and create amazing memories with like-minded people. More so we exchanged ideas about web3, philosophy and food in a beautiful space surrounded by good people and an electrifying atmosphere.🤩.
In retrospect we can conclude that the hackathon was a big deal because it was the first of its type in Ghana and it opened the door for more innovation in this region. Many of the participants were first time builders who were new to web3 technology and were extremely excited that we have created this opportunity for them to connect, learn, and grow together. The pictures speak for themselves, follow us on Linkedin or X (formerly Twitter) for more beautiful pictures and for all the upcoming footage.
Kudos to my amazing team Richard T. Miller, Aishat Suleiman, Emmanuel Kusi, Likem Dzokoto, Sahabia Yakubu and Vicentia Asilevi! This is definitely a September to remember.
Once again, a heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved and breathed this vision into life. I believe that builder focused events like this is where the magic happens.
Stay curious and see you latest at ETHAccra 2024. 💕🫶🏿
Love
